Maize stem borer is one of the major threatening global pests of maize. Stem Borer is indigenous to Asia and became established in eastern Africa in the early 1930s. It is one of the most economically damaging pests in Asia and Africa, attacking all parts of the plant except the roots. It has rapidly spread over a wide geographical range and has proven to be a very efficient colonizer and devastating pest wherever it may occur.

Host-plant parts affected are leaves, stems, and seeds. Neonates produce characteristic leaf windowing while feeding. They initially feed in the leaf whorl; early larval stages mine in leaves causing yellow streaks and after a few days bore down inside the funnel. Feeding on leaf whorl sometime causes “dead heart”. Seeds can be affected by both internal and external feeding, leading to empty grains and cobs filled with frass. Larvae may move down outside the stem and then bore into it just above an internode and cause breakage.

The fly lays eggs either at the base of young shoots near soil surfaces, or in older plants, on the leaves. The maggots crawl inside the sheath and bore into the heart of the young shoot killing the growing point and the youngest leaf, which turns brown and withers. This damage is known as "dead heart".

Armyworms earned their common name by eating all plant matter they encounter in their wide dispersals, like a large army. Armyworms usually feed damage corn by chewing leaves. They prefer to feed on the succulent leaves in the whorl first. Feeding is usually confined to leaf margins, but occasionally they may strip the entire plant leaving only the midrib of the leaves.
