Caterpillars bore into the midrib of the leaf, leaving red markings and small holes on the leaves. Then it bores further to the upper portion of stem, causing "dead heart" symptoms as the top of the shoot dies off. Gradually, side branches start growing from a lower node, giving a characteristic "bunchy top" appearance to the plant.

Sugarcane stem borer caterpillars kill the plant growing points and cause “dead hearts” (the youngest still unfolded leaves wilt and die), broken sugarcane stalks and reduced sugar contents in infested sugarcane crops. If plant is attacked after can formation, then side sprouting is also seen. The tunnels inside the plant stems allow other pests and diseases into the sugarcane stalks which can also increase crop losses. Infested sugarcane stalks are easily broken by the wind.

Root borer is the only species of borers, infesting the underground portion of sugarcane and, hence, referred to by its common name root borer or rootstock borer. Root borer is found to damage crop from April to October and having about five generations in a year.

Termites attack the planted sugarcane setts at the ends or eye buds but in severe attack, the internodes as well. After germination, they attack the roots, eat the content, and filling the galleries with soil. This results in leaf drying and ultimately the death of plants.

Young larvae enter top portion of the cane through a single hole just above the node. They feed in groups by making spiral galleries which run upwards. After a week or ten days they attack the adjacent canes. Dry sugarcane tops are produced due to the attack of Goraspur borer during July to September and large patches of dried canes appear due to its attack.
